Jack pen A small pen built in a barn and used for holding a Jack (number 2). Jacks, sometimes kept for breeding, were often very mean-tempered and, in the confines of a barn, needed to be kept separated from the other farm animals.

Jack screw A Jack (number 3) with a heavy CAST IRON base and a large screw that can be turned to raise or lower a load.

Jacks A children’s game played with a small ball and several jacks (see Jack, number 1).

Jamaica train A row of iron kettles (usually three) used to boil cane juice (sugar cane for making sugar, sorghum for making molasses).
